AE 725-Numerical Optimization and Structural Design (Fall, even years)

This course presents the classical theories of unconstrained and constrained optimization. Unconstrained techniques covered include the steepest descent, conjugate gradient, and “Newton’s” methods. Constrained optimization methods include sequential approximate problem techniques as well as the method of feasible directions. Computer aided solutions using both Matlab and Patran/NASTRAN are used to solve practical design problems in aerospace engineering.

AE 727-Aircraft Antenna Systems (Fall, odd years)

This course is divided into three broad topic areas: applications, fundamental operating theories, and analysis and design techniques. At the completion of the class, the student should understand the aircraft antenna integration and design process. Students will have a basic knowledge of EM wave propagation and the basic operating physics of antennas and antenna arrays. Students will become familiar with typical aircraft loads, radome structural sizing techniques, and good design principals. Students will also be able to use common CAD tools and analysis techniques.

AE 510-Aerospace Materials & Processes (Fall)

The course objectives are to provide each student with 1) an understanding of material selection criteria; 2) a familiarity with the material behavior of engineering materials, particularly alloys of iron (steel), aluminum, and titanium, as well as ceramics, plastics, and composites; and 3) a familiarity with manufacturing processes common to the aerospace industry. Course topics will be presented in a manner to provide students the knowledge required to produce designs of aerospace systems with appropriate material and process specifications.

AE 421-Aerospace Computer Graphics (Spring)

The primary objective of this course is to teach student how to use common CAD tools used in the aerospace industry. In addition this course aims to help student develop skills for depicting aerospace vehicles and their components and subsystems for the purpose of illustration, design, and analysis using these CAD tools. Good design practice as well as designing to requirements is also emphasized.
